1. Saturday Benkyo Class Review – Today's Training
Today the focus was on some of the Kata we see less often: Rohai, Jitte and Jion – a refresher and run-through to blow off some cobwebs. It is not often you see these Kata on courses, but they are great to know and practise, and if you don't know them they offer a great insight into Wado-Ryu principles and movement.
We went through each Kata to refamiliarise ourselves. Then we looked at some of the movements that are similar in some or all of the Kata to have a point of reference and reinforce the “learn once, use it many times” philosophy. We looked at some Kaisetsu from the Kata to give some of the moves context, then moved on to looking at Ippon 1, 2 and 3, but putting some of the Kata moves into action within the Ippons. Finally we looked at Kihon Number 1 and 4 and again took the movements from these Kata to better understand what the Kata are trying to teach us about posture, position and timing. As always a great and insightful lesson.
